I caught up with Shelly Hatton at Maker Faire Austin, where she was demonstrating antique circular sock knitting machines! She writes, “Circular sock machines have been around since the early 1900’s and were built so sturdily that they still survive and work to this day. The machines were originally advertised as a way for homemakers to make money at home by cranking out socks, but the learning curve was really high. Currently, there are a number of enthusiasts around the globe who help each other figure out how to use these really nifty antique machines.” Shelly got interested in these machines when she heard a friend had knitted a pair of sock in two hours!

That is really cool …
Still, I’ve always wondered how they made store-bought socks like that…
That is really cool! Still…I think I prefer hand-knitting. I like incorporating lace into my knitting too much

Hi:
If you’ve ever seen or heard of Bond Knitting machines that are still sold, those use the same sort of hooks with the latches in a flat layout. I love low tech machines that are human powered.

that was really interesting. Wont be long before people go back to doing this again. The idea of importing all of these products and having people sit at home and doing nothing is contrary to logic.

Why watch a video …
Why watch a video with a title “Antique Sock Knitting Machines” and then bag-the-crap out of the video, the filming, the person showing the knitting, the topic… if you’re not interested in this topic (but are too dumb to leave the page or stop watching), please don’t think that others are interested in your childish comments? Get a life.
